Giuseppe Mazzini and the Process of Independence and Political Integration of the African States

Abstract
This paper analyses the reception of the works of Giuseppe Mazzini in the process of independence and political cooperation of African states. The anti-colonial perspective of Giuseppe Mazzini, in fact, required the collaboration between European nations and African people in order to stimulate the latter’s moral and then political emancipation. For Mazzini, all African people were entitled to assert the principle of selfdetermination. His doctrines therefore found, especially in the aftermath of World War II, an indirect spread in Africa. Some leaders, such as Ghanaian Kwame Nkrumah and South African Anton Lembede, transposed his teaching in their battles which were not only aimed at the independence of African states, but were also meant to provide the basis for a full political integration of the continent.
